This summer will see the release of CarPlay, an exciting new technology that allows users to seamlessly integrate their iPhone's content with their car stereo. Although many car manufacturers are planning to implement this new technology in their new models, Pioneer's NEX Infotainment system will be the first to roll out a working system, allowing users to enjoy this new iPhone integration right away without having to buy a new car equipped with CarPlay.
CarPlay launches when you plug in your iPhone 5 or higher, running iOS 7.1 or later. Right away the features are familiar, with Siri voice commands and an iPhone-like interface (including a home button) all accessible through your NEX car stereo's screen. Drivers can send text messages, place calls, access their music, their contacts and their maps, all using voice commands.
For the moment, Pioneer's NEX is the only product using CarPlay, via a firmware update to a select five of their existing car stereos, but there are some luxury car lines such as the new Mercedes-Benz, Volvo and Ferrari that will be rolling off the lines this year with CarPlay included.
